Pollination is essential for many cropping systems. Wind pollination is often not enough to achieve an efficient set for a majority of crops. Insect pollination (from wild hives/insects or managed hive populations) is the primary mechanism for achieving good set for production. However dwindling bee populations is becoming a huge issue for sustainability around the world.
Some of our work on pollination has been looking at training hives of bees to pollinate a specific variety of flower/crop for a period of time to increases set and reduce costs of hive rental.
We have also looked at investigating mechanical pollination of crops as an alternative to hive rental and low bee numbers.
